6 Candidates, But Only 5 Seats

Because early voting begins Monday, this week’s edition of Park Cities People includes a story about the contested Town Council election, a rarity in Highland Park. Can anyone remember the last time the town had one of those? (You’ll find the answer in your newspaper.)

UPDATE: I just realized that you’ll also find a headline in your newspaper that says “Six Vie For 5 Seats on HP Council,” even though the story lists only five candidates. I guess, technically, the print headline is correct, because Mayor Bill Seay Jr. is running for re-election unopposed, and the mayor does sit on the council. But it still feels like a big, embarrassing mistake.

UPDATE TO THE UPDATE: OK, the real mistake was that incumbent Councilman Larry Nixon was left off the list of candidates. So that is a big mistake. And if you count Seay, maybe the headline should have read “Seven Vie Six Seats on HP Council.” And maybe I should go back to bed.

Probably me… of course it’s a mathematical impossibility.

Highland Park Community League votes for the endorsed candidates.. the “odd” candidate backers vote for the “odd” candidate and 4 of the community league endorsed candidates… It’s really a mathematical impossibility… really… run the numbers… 1000 ways and it comes up the same.. I ran twice.. even knowing that..

Whatever Yvonne Crum says, you can take to the bank.

You may not understand it, but you can take it to the bank.

If I lived in Highland Park (instead of Southlake), I’d vote for her just because she’s incorruptibly honest, humorous, tireless, and she has a philanthropic heart.

That is, if she was running for Council.

Yes,@singularity that is true.. but most people believe that when the ballot says “vote for 5 candidates”.. that their ballot will be null and void..(yes, i know that’s silly) but true.

It also sorta defeats the purpose if you say “only” vote for Yvonne or whomever. that was the case in ’76.. i wanted participation from the community as only 320 voted in the prior election and I wanted more people use to voting.. HP had the hightest voter registration in the USA per capita in 1976.. No women were on the HPCL board and certainly none on the council. There was a bond issue
on the ballot in ’78 I believe and I ran again to get the community out… the bond issue passed and I didn’t win the election but over 1500 voted…that was a good thing… you never know when a real issue will come up and there needs to be regular voting.. or at least don’t spend the money on voting is all are uncontested…I believe that is the case now… I live in North Dallas and don’t keep up with HP elections as I didn’t when i lived in HP. All are good kind people that want the best for the best community in America but one day something could come up that warranted attention and it might be shrugged off… good luck to all the candidates…
