Highland Park Police Urge Residents to Stay Home

This just in from the Highland Park Crime Watch:

Water is rising RAPIDLY in several areas of Highland Park and it is creating extremely HAZARDOUS conditions.
HPDPS is urging ALL residents to stay home until the rain starts to subside.

Two areas of tremendous concern:
1.)  FITZHUGH-WYCLIFFE-LAKESIDE-ST JOHN’S Corner
Last year Officer Kilmer had to rescue two people who were trapped in their car.
A few years ago, a young seminary student DROWNED as she was pulled away from her car by rushing water.

2.)  BEVERLY BRIDGE at DCC
WE will keep you updated, but the water will only continue to rise as the rain continues to pour.
Please exercise CAUTION and sound judgment if you find it necessary to drive through Highland Park.
HPDPS is working all areas of concern and thank you in advance to your part in helping them keep the town safe. Please, stay home, if possible.

Are there similar hazardous spots in UP?

Kinda interesting that (potential) water issues, mainly drainage, is the reason we have 2 cities in the Park Cities. UP wanted to be annexed by HP but HP didn’t want the ‘swampy’ land that is now the City of UP.

I thought there were 2 cities so Dallas couldn’t annex them…

Hi, has anyone else seen the giant tree on Marquette that got uprooted in yesterday’s storm? It made my jaw drop this morning. i think it’s the 3600 block.

Aug 13 – its at the corner of Marquette and Thackery and yes, my jaw dropped also.
However, as we passed by yesterday and saw it, it led to a great conversation with my kids. That was a beautiful tree on the outside but did you notice that the ground is barely disturbed where it was uprooted? We guessed that at some point the roots must have begun to die and it just didn’t have the foundation to keep it steady and hold it through the storm. You’d never know by looking at the tree – it looked healthy.
People are like that too. My Freshman boy commented that his friends ‘root systems’ are being tested this year, already. Peer pressure, alcohol, drugs, unsupervised parties… Some are standing strong; the roots they’ve been developing since childhood are proving to be healthy and deep. Others are getting pretty tossed around in the storm.
I hated seeing that tree down, but I hate even more to think that kids/families are discovering that their foundation is failing them.

I drove by this afternoon around 3 on my way to Hyer, and my jaw dropped again. The tree was gone! Wow!
I love your metaphor. I think I will share that with my family at dinner tonight.
