‘Dandy’ Don is Gone

Former SMU and Dallas Cowboys quarterback “Dandy” Don Meredith died Sunday of a brain hemorrhage at the age of 72.

I was a little too young to see Meredith play in the NFL, but I absolutely loved him as a broadcaster on “Monday Night Football” while growing up. In fact, his playing career was over before I was born. But his incredible personality always came through loud and clear on Monday nights, especially when he sang his signature version of Willie Nelson’s “Turn Out the Lights” when the game’s outcome was pretty much decided.

I’ll never forget covering the SMU-Houston game two years ago. Already battling health issues, Meredith was on hand for the game, although he stayed in the press box the whole game. It was great to see him in person. He will be missed.
