Is Robert Dowe Coleman a Risk to the Community?

Robert Dowe Coleman, the University Park resident who registered as a sex offender late last year, has checked in with the UPPD as required. That’s good. But is this? He’s listed as a “low risk.”

Chief Gary Adams said the risk level is set by the probation department.

The last crime of which he was convicted is 1983. I assume the professionals used statistics to assign their risk ratings.

It’s a good thing that he performed his required check-in with UPPD. I hope that, had he not, they would have checked on him. Regardless, is this really news?

It’s ALWAYS news to remind the community of a sexual predator in our midst.

And while his last conviction may have been in 1983, there are much more recent concerning behaviour that warrants our attention.

I agree. He has a recent history as well and concerning behaviors. His crimes back in the 80’s were atrocious and can never be taken lightly. As far as I know, pedophiles never rehabilitate so we need to always be on watch. Thank you Merritt for checking to make sure that he checked in.

This doesn’t qualify as recent history and the video incident was not criminal. Merritt knows this because she publicized the court records.

Indeed, in 2006, a former lover accused Coleman of molestation in 1996 because the young man was underage at the time their relationship started. The case resulted in a hung jury because apparently the relationship lasted 4 years or longer and the young man’s age when the sexual activity started was not clear to the jury.

There is no question that an adult should never be in a sexual relationship with a child.

The case was scheduled to continue last Fall. However, the complaining witness decided he did not want to testify so the charges were dropped. In addition to the lengthy time period, his attorney probably advised him that his credibility was at stake because he continued the relationship with Coleman for so long.

Parents, don’t let your child spend large amounts of time alone with ANY adult. The Boy Scouts require two-deep leadership, as do many church groups.

This recent enough for you Bess? Just because it wasn’t a crime, doesn’t mean it’s not recent history. Defend this monster if you want, and try to soften his intent by calling a teenage boy his “former lover”. A lawyer stalling a case for 4 years is telling. You should be ashamed of yourself. If Merritt doesn’t, I’ll keep bringin it to the communities attention that this monster lives here, taping young children without permission.

Police say he won’t face charges connected with shooting the video because no crime was committed. In that case, police were alerted by the boy’s parents, who said a stranger presented them with a video of their son playing music.

“He [the suspect] went back to the residence with the video and made contact with the parents and basically was trying to tell them how talented their son was as a musician,” said University Park Police Capt. Leon Holman. “Whether he was using that as a ploy to get close to the kid is anyone’s guess.”

Police later determined the stranger with the video was a sex offender who has lived on Bryn Mawr Drive for more than 20 years.

A man fitting his description (only now with a beard) in a car just like the car he drives has been caught (by parents) photographing young kids TWICE in the last 2 weeks. One time he drove away before police arrived, and the other time he fled on foot and police didn’t catch him.

I’m worried that this is the same guy….

I think he’s been caught three times now. I received a message this morning from another mom (I believe this is the third incident in 3 weeks) about this guy taking pictures of her kids.

Where can we get a picture of him? Are the schools aware that this guy is going around taking pictures of our kids?

I feel fairly certain that the mom’s in UP an HP are NOT going to put up with it. I better not catch him taking pictures of my kids! I wish I knew what he looked like NOW. We need a current photo of this sicko. If anyone has a photo is there a way to distribute it so we know who we are to be looking out for?
