What in The Hollow Are You Doing This Summer?

Give or take a few days, summer vacation is here. That means those delightful little (and not so little) tikes that were usually only home after 3 p.m. will now be all yours, all the time. If you’re not as with it as Michele, and still need to get your summer schedules in order, keep reading.

The overnight camp experience can be daunting. If they’re not quite ready for it, day camps will help ease them into the idea. For a sampling of local entertainment options to keep your kids—and you—sane this summer, go to the jump.

Fairy Princess Camp/Superhero Training Camp

Where: Kidville at Preston Royal Village

When: 9:15-11:15 a.m., Princesses June 6 – 10, Aug. 15 – 19, Superheroes June 13 – 17, Aug. 22 – 26

Ages: 3 to 5 years old

Cost: $250

This one-week fantasy camp will indulge your child with gender-specific dreams of royalty or superpowers. Princess campers will be pampered in the salon before taking on the crafts of queens-in-training, wand and wig making. Superheroes will start the day by working out in the gym and then head to the lab to concoct science experiments to save the world.

Hip Hop Dance Class

Where: Town North YMCA

When: June 13 – 17, June 20 – 24, June 27 – July 1, 1 – 4 p.m.

Ages: 7 to 12 years old

Cost: Family member $125, Activity member $145

If your child would rather moonwalk than ride a bike, this class will make you a No. 1 hit around the house. In addition to Michael Jackson’s signature move, campers will learn how to do moves like the Harlem Shake, crip walk, popping, glide, and heel toe. Shake a tail feather on over to the YMCA and sign up.

J Summer Camps

Where: Aaron Family JCC

The JCC is branding its camps as the “real social network.” With opportunities including local travel, leadership training, and athletic competitions, I’m inclined to believe them. You must be a J Member or J Camp User Fee Member to register. Call 214-239-7138 for information on individual camps.
