Teenager Jacob King Runs For City Council

If things go his way, Jacob King could have a seat on the City Council before he has a high school diploma.

The 18-year-old senior at Bishop Lynch is one of four candidates in District 13, which covers most of Preston Hollow as well as Bluffview, Devonshire, and Greenway Parks. A lifelong Preston Hollow resident, King is realistic about his chances of being elected.

“You’re going to ask yourself, ‘Doesn’t he realize that he doesn’t have a shot in hell?’ ” he said. “Well, sometimes, lost causes are the only things worth fighting for.”

The other hopefuls on the May 11 ballot will be businessman Leland Burk, nurse and volunteer Jennifer Staubach Gates, and perennial candidate Richard Sheridan. Left on the outside looking in was Holly Golvach, who filed paperwork listing her husband as her campaign treasurer but was unable to get the required number of signatures to the city secretary’s office by Friday’s deadline.

King lives with his grandmother Mollye Vilbig, on Daria Drive, “down the street from President Bush,” he said. So what did Grandma think of this candidacy?

“She was all for it,” he said. “She’s always been very supportive of me.”

And what did his friends at Bishop Lynch say?

“Like anything else politically, you get mixed reactions,” King said. “Some people said, ‘Oh, good for you. That’s great, Jacob.’ Then other people said, ‘Why are you wasting your time?’

You can read more about King in this week’s edition of Preston Hollow People.
