Mosquito Season is Upon Us

If you’re a resident of University Park, you can pick up a free mosquito dunk at City Hall anytime between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

What’s a mosquito dunk? It’s OK — I didn’t know either. The dunk looks like “a small, beige doughnut,” according to the city. It floats in standing water and slowly dissolves to release a “bacterium toxic to all species of mosquito larvae.” So basically, it’s a doughnut thingy that kills mosquitos before they develop and is harmless to people, pets, and plants — works for me.

You can use the dunk in “fish ponds, flower pots, rain barrels, or other standing water locations.” Remember, standing water is one of the main things to fight in mosquito season; it’s a breeding ground. The dunks are good for 30 days, so be a good neighbor and pick up yours today. Just don’t forget to show your driver’s license.
