Five Highland Park High School musicians — junior Katelin Adams, junior Kathryn Davidson, sophomore Iva Sadler, junior Lizzy Seay, and senior Rodman Steele — have been named to all-state music groups. They will perform Feb. 15 in San Antonio as part of the Texas Music Educators Association Clinic/Convention.

All-state is the highest honor a Texas music student can receive. More than 60,000 students initially entered the competitive process last fall.

Davidson, Seay, and Steele are among 504 vocalists who have been selected to perform. Davidson will be third chair in the Texas All-State Mixed Choir. Seay will be fifth chair in the Texas All-State Women’s Choir. And Steele will be eighth chair in the Texas All-State Men’s Choir.

Adams, who plays piccolo, and Sadler, who plays French horn, are among 900 instrumentalists selected to perform with the all-state concert and jazz bands.

I’ll admit that I didn’t know whether a piccolo player would be in the all-state band or the all-state orchestra. I had to do a Google Images search to figure out what kind of instrument that is. But that search told me that “piccolo” is not just the name of a musical instrument. Go ahead and try it to see what I mean.
