Some Lamplighter students entered the school’s auditorium barefoot last week, tossing their shoes into a large pile. They will be donated to Soles4Souls, an organization that delivers shoes to millions of disadvantaged children around the world.

The assembly last week “kicked off” The Lamplighter School’s third annual shoe drive. It has donated more than 8,000 pairs of shoes to Souls4Soles in the last two years.

A fourth-grade representative from the school’s Green Team spoke at the assembly about how different life would be if he had only one pair of shoes, like the children that receive donations from Soles4Souls.

“[I was] checking my closet and realizing how many shoes I have… tennis shoes, basketball shoes, and flip-flops,” said student representative Jake Kirk. “I thought, ‘Man, I have a lot of shoes; I don’t need this many.’”

At the assembly, each grade gave a small presentation. Some sang songs; Kirk recognized students for notes they wrote for the children or posters they created for the event. Then the CEO of Nashville-based Soles4Souls addressed the school, thanking them for their participation.

The drive will conclude on Friday with a carnival, where students will help load the shoes on to trucks.
