Earlier today, Highland Park learned of its assignment to District 15-5A for the next two years as part of the UIL biennial realignment process. You can read more about that here.

That announcement cleared the way for the Scots to finalize their football schedule for the next two seasons, and it will be challenging. Not only does HP have a tough district slate, but the nondistrict schedule will be upgraded significantly.

The Scots will begin the season with three games against schools who have experienced plenty of postseason success — Rockwall, Waxahachie, and Mansfield Timberview.

Rockwall fell to Lake Travis last season in the Class 6A state quarterfinals, Waxahachie is a traditional powerhouse who is back on the upswing under head coach Jon Kitna, and Timberview won 10 games as recently as 2014 at the Class 5A level.

The district includes a mix of familiar foes (Mesquite Poteet, West Mesquite, Forney, North Forney) and new faces (Lovejoy, Wylie East, Royse City). Of the eight teams (including HP), five won a playoff game last year.

We’ll analyze some other sports later, but here’s an early look at the 2016 HP football schedule. The open date will be in the middle of the 15-5A schedule, on the weekend of Sept. 30. Keep in mind that for 2017, the opponents will be the same but the locations will be reversed.
