Surging Longhorns Fall to Carter

With two comeback wins already on its resume, W.T. White couldn’t duplicate the feat on Friday in its nondistrict finale.

Carter shut out the Longhorns in the second half to secure a 24-14 victory at Loos Stadium, handing WTW its first loss of the season. The Longhorns (2-1) will now focus on the start of District 9-6A play on Friday at Richardson.

With the score tied at 14, and following a scoreless third quarter, the Cowboys (2-1) took the lead on a safety to start the final stanza. And they followed with a touchdown on their next drive to extend the margin.

Meanwhile, the Carter defense stifled a WTW attack that averaged 44 points in its first two games. The Longhorns committed three turnovers and were outgained 288-65 on the ground.

Elijah Edwards gave WTW the lead with a 1-yard scoring run late in the first quarter. After the Cowboys took a 14-6 advantage, the Longhorns got their biggest play of the game on a 64-yard scoring pass from Jason Salinas to Brinden Hatten. The big receiver finished with a game-high 118 receiving yards on seven catches.

Jamalrian Jones paced Carter’s rushing attack with 185 yards on 23 carries. Kace Williams ran for a touchdown and also threw a scoring pass to Tailon Garrett.
